Dating Coach or Shadchan: Which Kind of Help Do You Need?

By Adeena Halberstam

Dating coach and volunteer shadchan with 15+ years of experience.

A shadchan helps with possible matches and introductions. A dating coach helps you think through your own questions, decisions and communication. You may benefit from either or both, depending on where you need support.

When dating feels stuck, the first question is often who to call. Another shadchan? A coach? Someone who already knows you? The answer depends on what is making the process difficult right now.

What does a shadchan help with?

A shadchan generally helps identify possible matches, arrange introductions and communicate feedback. Some stay closely involved as a relationship develops and offer considerable guidance. Others mainly help make the introduction. It is worth asking what their role will be rather than assuming every shadchan works the same way.

If you are ready to date but few suitable suggestions are coming, connecting with shadchanim who understand you may be an appropriate next step. You may need to clarify what you are looking for, update the way you introduce yourself, or help the people suggesting matches understand you better.

What does a dating coach help with?

A dating coach focuses on your experience of dating. You might work through a question about continuing a relationship, prepare for a conversation, examine a recurring pattern, or talk about what keeps delaying your first step.

For example, you may have several suggestions but find yourself dismissing each one for reasons you cannot explain. Or you may enjoy spending time with someone while struggling to say what you need. Those are questions about how you are navigating dating, even when introductions themselves are not the problem.

Can one person do both?

Yes. Someone may work as both a shadchan and a coach, and guidance can be part of a shadchan's work. The labels alone do not tell you what is included. Ask directly whether the arrangement covers introductions, coaching sessions, communication with the other side, or some combination.

At Matches by Adeena, paid coaching is separate from Adeena's volunteer matchmaking. Booking a coaching session does not mean she will search for matches or promise suggestions. Her 15+ years as a volunteer shadchan inform her understanding of the process, while the session focuses on your own situation.

What if nobody suitable seems to be coming up?

A lack of suggestions does not automatically mean you are doing something wrong. Start by considering whether the people helping you have a clear, current picture of you and the kind of marriage you hope to build.

A shadchan may help with introductions. A coach may help you put your priorities into words, think about feedback you are receiving, or prepare to approach shadchanim. Coaching does not replace access to potential matches, and it should not be sold as though it does.

What if you are already dating someone?

Your shadchan may help with practical communication or feedback between both sides. A coach can give you time to think through your own response: what you like, what concerns you, what you have not asked, and what you want to understand next.

Before involving several people, consider what you want from each conversation. You might ask your shadchan to clarify a practical question and use coaching to prepare for a direct conversation with the person you are dating. Agree on what may be shared so advice does not turn into messages passing around without your knowledge.

What if you have not started dating?

You do not have to wait until you are in a relationship to ask for help. Coaching can be a place to discuss hesitation, expectations, or a practical obstacle and decide on a manageable next step. If your main need is introductions and you feel ready to begin, speaking with a shadchan may be the more immediate step.

Start with one sentence

Try finishing this sentence: The part I need help with right now is... Be as specific as you can. I need people to understand what I am looking for. I need to ask a difficult question. I cannot decide whether to go out again.

That sentence can help you choose whom to approach and make the conversation more useful. You do not have to settle every question before asking for support. You only need somewhere to begin.
